Alms are for the poor and the needy, and those employed to administer the (funds); for those whose hearts need to be reconciled; for those in bondage, and in debt; in the cause of Allah; and for the wayfarer: (thus is it) ordained by Allah, and Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom. [Surah at-Tawbah(9): Ayah 60]
Zakat is one of the primary duties of a Muslim. The depth of wisdom in this duty is profound! The benefits go far beyond mere material exchange of goods or currency.
Where there is a need locally, it is encouraged that Zakat be collected and distributed locally. If there is not, it would be better to distribute elsewhere.
